As a CNLP in New York state, you will become one of many green industry professionals who share a common desire to continue their education and grow as professionals.

In order to qualify for the CNLP Program, you must have graduated from a recognized two- or four-year college with a degree in a horticulture-related field, OR have at least three years experience working in the horticulture industry.

Step 1: Complete the Application

Download the CNLP Exam Application, fill it out and send it to NYSNLA headquarters with the applicable fee. You may scan and email or fax it to us with your credit card information, or mail it in with a check.

Be sure to list all your qualifying education/experience on your application.

Applicants need to be sponsored by a current CNLP. If you don’t have a sponsor, let us know and we’ll set you up with one.

Step 2: Start Studying

Once NYSNLA receives your exam application and payment, we will send you a secure link to the newest verison of the CNLP Manual (2022). The CNLP Certification Exam is based on the material in this manual.

Some Regions hold review classes in the weeks leading up to the exam. Fees for these classes, if any, are not included in your application fee.

Step 3: Take the Exam

CNLP exams are offered in the late winter and early spring. Unless you tell us otherwise, you will be registered for the CNLP exam in your home region, or the one closest to you if yours doesn’t offer its own exam. If you would like to register in a different region, please let us know and we will accommodate you.

The exam has two parts: a written test and a plant identification test. You must pass both to earn certification.

If you fail one or both parts, you may take the failed section(s) again for a small retake fee. You may do this in the current year, where feasible, or the following year.

Step 4: Be Proud!

Display your CNLP certificate and decal proudly to tell customers you’re committed to continuing your education and growing as a professional.

Be sure to take advantage of those continuing education opportunities! Not only will you gain useful knowledge; you’ll earn credits toward recertification. Click here to learn more about the recertification process.
